      Unfortunately a bittersweet  day came to its end like a blink of an eye. But it is an universal truth that every good or bad thing comes to its end. But here this day came to its end to begin new journey.... To move further one has to be detach from attachments, As a theory of  lord Krishna. 

     Overall it was great day. My indefatigable senior and classmates presented their uphill battle with the help of Presentation, By doing Dance, by preparing Memorabilia, By showing Videos And  by Singing. In memorabilia they have presented whole year's  academic activities done by Department and also done by the student .

  

    All the things  were terrific. By enjoying the video we came to know the cryptic characteristics of the seniors. All videos were well edited.  FB  pictures also connected properly with the characteristics of the person. Song recitation was  also melodious .

                                         

      We enjoyed Assami Folk dance from one of my senior who belongs to Assam. It was so much entertaining. 

     After completing all this things  Dilip Barad Sir has given us motivational abbreviation letters to put into practice for  our day to day life. And that are....

      1- Priority 

      2- Perseverance 

      3- Punctuality 

      4- Practice 

      5- Play 

      6- Fly 

       As a junior what I feel about seniors is.... all are very much friendly. They are like shoulder of the body, without Shoulder, hand will not work. But interesting quality which is still remaining in them is they have  put all juniors ahead of them in every place. They have gave the more opportunities to the juniors.

       What I am feeling right now is that it is  like.... At our  home if we are small we  enjoy everything, we get more freedom, we have not at all any concern of anything. ( But it is also stereotypes )But after coming of small person in our home, our status automatically becomes bigger. So now our duty changed. We  have to be more onus. And also to keep new person happy and motivated in every way. 

        I have never met seniors like you in whole my career.

Sharmeen Obaid - Chinoy 's Academy Award - Online discussion

   

 Thinking Activity in this online discussion is to reflect on the points of agreement and disagreement. What are the arguments can be given with the help of Cultural Studies and Postcolonialism. 

  " Stop telling Sharmeens and Adigas to Photoshop reality ".

  Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy has won the academic award for her documentary, 'A Girl in the River.' Which portrays the negative but real  image of Pakistan.  In which we find how honor killing is happening in Pakistan and also it tells the poor condition of women. It has been much celebrated at home . Same as Arvind Adiga's work "The White Tiger" has been also celebrated widely .

     Postcolonial View :

     According to me if writer gets award from west it doesn't mean they becomes happy to seeing the condition of that region. But by spreading this situation, who is in power they may tries to change it . But after studying the Cultural Studies we might feel that ultimately they wants to show the inferiority of it. But yet it is necessary to open the eyes of people and also of the Power. 

        There can be a question arises in our mind that now they are ruling over us by this way ,But without deep studying we can not conclude this thing. 

     Cultural Studies :

     We may feel that this kind of writer wants to be famous in people by publishing this kind of work. Because to get more publicity they already knows which kind of work gives more publicity .

         In the country like India people has so many problems so they might feels that he or she is talking about us. They are arguing for us by publishing their work. 

    But yet it must require to talk against the power or  to talk about the real condition of the country . And we have great example of it is Ravish Kumar ,Who always draws the picture of real issues and also of real condition of the country .

  So this kind of writer is in a way doing good work.

Academic Tour - At Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar

                                   

   On the 13th March 2018 we the student of English Department has visited ...
# Akshardham ( Gandhinagar)
# Central University of Gujarat
      There we visited Lab, Library under the guidance of Prof. Atanu Bhattacharya and Prof. Balaji Ranganathan. And we had good interaction with them. And another interesting thing was that there are more students of outside Gujarat. Also there is no CCTV cameras in the class. Prof. Balaji Ranganathan talked about....
                                       

                                                                         

 -  How to be good research student.
   - From where you can get all these related       things.

  -  According to him your speaking skills is         inferior in compare to research skills. One must should have good research skills , so we can say that they give more importance to the research skills.

 - The interesting talk was that he directly came on the topic of NET  and it means according to him GSET  is not enough thing to talk on it. In short he said that step out in the world of opportunities, because there are still so much need of research scholar. And also he gives importance to do further  study after completing PG.

    Over all it was our fortune to listen him. Great person with friendly behavior. 
                                 

# Visited Mahatma Mandir 

        It's a Great place to take visit. A skillful example of modern technology. Where we can get whole  facts about Gandhiji through liveliness. We himself feel like we were also the part of his contemporary time. The name of the place here proves that why it is # Mandir - " The True Mandir ".
                                     

# Visited Science City also.
                                   

    So it was great experience to take visit of this all places. A big  thank you to the seniors who has organized the Trip and also we all are grateful to Dr. Dilip Barad Sir who permitted us .

                      Now a days in our contemporary time we confronts with so many new words, which are necessary to understand deeply. And that words are like....

Liberals 

Nationalism 

Populism 

Intellectual Honesty 

Literature and Morality 

Political correctness 

Freedom and Technology 

These words are greatest challenge to the democracy. 

      Mario Vargas Llosa discusses these all words in the sense of Cultural Studies. And also he has very well argued that these kinds of things suppresses the individual freedom. He is a Peruvian write, Politician, Jornalist, Essayist, and college professor. And he belongs to the Latin America. He has won the Noble prize also in  Literature 'for his cartography of structures of power and his trenchant images of the individual's resistance ravolt  and defeat '. (Wikipedia) 

        He believes in individual as an autonomous and responsible being and freedom as the supreme asset. And he debated about all above Political Ideological issues in contemporary times. 

• Liberals : It means everyone has a freedom of everything. But what happens is, a few person are able to free from everything. But Political Ideologies suppresses their desire of freedom. They connect these freedom with culture and tries to destroy the voices of Liberals by  the taking help of mass. 

                                      

               

                         If young people raises their voices to oppose  the power than the power will use the cultural ideas against them,  which are forcefully stamped in the society to be remain in power.

• Nationalism  : If we truly thinks about freedom than we can not be "National ". Because some how these ideas of Nationalism makes us narrow minded. And it becomes an obstacle in freedom. And ultimately it takes us towards racism. If we say I am a Nationalist, it means I am privileges over another. And it can be apply in caste, religion and in race also. 

                                       

       

                            If we think deeply than we realizes that how can a person can believe in two opposite ideas... Like  at one place you says that "Vasudhev Kutumbkam " and other places you are says that Nation first ...

                                    

 Thus we can say that this idea of nationalism becomes dangerous for free thinkers. The best example of it is lies into  the white Americans who are driven by the political idea of nationalism and starts becoming narrow minded. 

• Populism  : It is a like a movement that mobilizes the population against an institution or government for their defense .Or it can be against the corrupt dominant elites and also to their followers. 

                                      

• Political Correctness : It is the enemy of the freedom : It means whatever you speak that must have voice of power or it should be not anti power. You have to speak as per their ideologies .But by  doing this thing ultimately you are creating hazard for democracy. Because you starts thinking as they wants not as you wish. 

                                      

                      Thus Political correctness becomes hazardous for freedom. 

• Literature and Morality  :  One must should have freedom to express their art and literature. Without any camouflaged  control. It can be anti of everything. It can be immoral. Their must should be bias free literature. 

• Technology : We all knows that today's time is being consider as a era of information. Technology becomes more vital for the commons. But some how this technology is becoming detriment for us. We can not believe in it because now one can easily give any fake news of anything....and most of the time it ruins the freedom of it. 

                                       

• Intellectual Honesty : One must have to work with intellectual honesty. It is applied to solve the issue without bias or without personal belief . It works with only truth .But some how it it becomes anti power than this power suppresses the voice of it .

                                       

       So we can conclude that How much  these all words are necessary for us to understand  the contemporary issues and that is the thing which is  very well argued  by Mario Vargas Llosa in his debate. And by studying these we becomes more aware about democracy and freedom which we have .

Cultural Studies - Media and Power

    Before discussing the Power and Media we must have to understand What is Cultural Studies? 

What is Cultural Studies :

    It is nearly impossible to define. It is made of ambiguous. The definition is comes out from Mathew Arnold 's idea. 

      It is for study with full of transperancy, full.of discipline, full of freedom and without anyone' s control. It is not to know about high and low ,elite and popular. But it is for encompasses everything. 

                                      

    But for Cultural Studies we must have to first study the" Power " with critical insights. And we knows that Power makes extensive use of the Media. 

     Relation are not free from Power dynamics. 

    What is Power :

     Is the ability to make others do what you would have them do.

      There are six main sources of civic power. 

  1. Physical Force =  In this source "Power" uses the physical power and tries to suppress the voices of common people. Who is raising their voices against Power. 

                                        

    If we take example of it than we find for the justice against rape people comes out on  the road and raises their voices against the power but by putting physical forces outside, power suppresses the voice .

  2. Wealth = Those persons who are richer they rules over the world. Even the government can not do anything against them. And whatever they wants do they can easily do because indirectly the rule is in the hand of them.

                                      

   Now a days there is Nidahas trophy is going on in Sri Lanka. But the broadcasting of it is on the channel of government and other private channel is only Jio TV.

  3. State Action = It means what to do or not  to do that  indirectly decides power and we just feel democratic system but some how we are not able to know that it is like dictatorship.  

                                         

  4. Social Norms = It means how people behaves with everyone. Person thinks that what people will think, what they says.

                                       

                                                                                     

   5. Ideas = It means an idea of individual thinking. How you think to come in power or against Power .

                                     

   6. Numbers = These numbers decides what to do or what not to do. In a way majority considers as a good. How can one person has these kinds of majority .

                                    

• How Power operates : 

            There is three laws of power .

   1- Power is never static 

    It means Power keeps changing . Opposition is not individual. 

   2- Power is like water  

          It means power is like liquid. It shapes as the form as it is. 

   3- Power compounds 

           It means power multiplies power.

      • Noam Chomsky gives five filters 

     1 Media Ownership  = It is for profit. " It is in their interest to push for whatever guarantees that profit."

   2 Advertising = It is not just that the media is selling you a product, they are also selling advertiser a product : you."

  3 Media Elite = Journalism can not be a " Check on power. Government ,corporations, institutions know how to influence the media. 

  4 Flack = The story is not in favour of power than they divert the conversation ,you will see the flack machine in action. 

                                      

   5 The Common enemy = To manufacture consent you need an enemy. Terrorist, immigrants. 

         Cultural studies makes one truly educated person. As the student cultivate the habit of questioning one discipline with the findings of another discipline as the student unlearn what specific disciplines taught and more importantly it teaches controversies. 

                                      

               *What is truly educated person...

       One must have ability to inquire something without external controls are with freedom. It is to be resourceful ,to be able to "Formulate serous question " and "question standard doctrine, if that's appropriate ...it means to find your own way.

Fiction and Lies - Online discussion

                                   

    Here I am discussing the differences between Fiction and Lies.

        According to me Fiction and Lies are both different, But some times I feels both are mixed. 

        Fiction is uses for art or entertainment. But a lies is usually a manipulation. But what we find is generally lies tells us that they are giving us truth but actually not. While writer who used fiction in their  work they tells that it is not fact. So we can say that liar truth is like "post truth ".

        In literature writer write with fiction and Plato argued that fictional work and creator of it ,all are liar. But they defences that it is only for enjoyment not for criticize. But in lies it keeps us in the darkness and we might feel we are in light. 

                                      

      Some how we can say that lies is harmful but fiction can  be harmful. For example some fictional work children tries to uses in their lives and as reult of it, It can be dangerous also. 

                                        

        So in a way I can say that lies only gives the harm. But fiction gives us so many new thoughts which were not in our mind. It plays vital role in opening up our mind. 

         Sometimes we find both are mixed with each other. Fictional and lies both are presented with each other .

          If we listen somebody saying that my success is a blessing of God, But those who are not aware of it they might consider it as a truth but this is not true it is lie, for success one has to do rigorous work. But it seems it is true because it is told by successful person, but it is harmful.

Deconstruction - Jacques Derrida

      What is Deconstruction... ?

      Deconstruction is a theory given by Jacques Derrida. We can not define deconstruction. And that Derrida himself also accepts. It is not a destructive activity but it is for inquiring into the foundation of everything . So the Post - Structuralist goes deep into the work, and tries to look from different approaches. It is for inquiring into the condition. By reading this we can find binary opposition. 

                                      

     It also inquires through philosophical system , at the same time it has some limitations also. Derrida rethinks the Western Philosophy.
                                         

       Derrida points out that these oppositions are not equal but hierarchic where the second term is considered either derivative or inferior to the first, priveledged one.
                                     

          According to him one can not react at final meaning. Derrida is drawing attention towards difference between speech and writing, He questions privilege of speech over writing and that is calls Phonocentricism. 

      Here I am deconstructing the advertisement of Fortune cooking oil .

                                     

                In this advertisement we find a scene of Hospital. A patient is lying in the bed. A nurse is taking care of him. And an old lady tries to give home food to him and she is trying to convince that nurse to allow her.
                But she denies. But one day she convinced and allowing her to give food to the patient.
   
                So we may think that this is  very good advertisement .But if we start deconstructing it than we realize that how it shows the reality of life. Some how they give us goggles to see in only one direction .

    Deconstructed points =

   We can understand that in Hospital we have to go so many times ...than they will look in our problems.
   We have to give bribe to them... Than they will work. It means we can buy anybody by money. Another meaning is if you have money than you can do anything.
   It shows the lake of characterness of that nurse. Because after giving food to her she allowed that lady to give her home food to the patient. The another question arises in our mind is in Hospital there is question of the  food 'quality.
    So by shallow observation we can not find this kind of things from this advertisement but after looking from various aspects we can find that how problematic this advertisement is. Indirectly it criticises the government section.
