# At Department of English 

                                        

      Before a few days ago I had watched the movie The Modern Times. It is directed by Charlie Chaplin. It is a 1936 American comedy film. It is a tiptop movie. 

# Main characters 

  Charlie Chaplin as a tramp

  Paulette Goddard as a gamin 

# The title Modern Times 

   The title it self suggests that the time is now changed. A drastic change came into industrial area. People are supposed to be as fast as Modern Times 's machines. And they themselves becomes machines.

                                     

                                       

# The beginning 

    The beginning of the movie tells so many things. We can see a big clock is ticking. The clock it self is a example of modern technology. We think that it is for our comfort But in a way it controls the freedom. As in today's contemporary time we see so many institution which subjugate the people. 

                                       

# The Sheeple 

   At the same time we also finds the sheeples which turned into the people. Which shows that no one has time, everyone is rushing towards the industry. People are supposed to be intellectual but for the employment they are not thinking anything else. The showing of sheeples shows the great thinking of Charlie Chaplin because in today's time we finds so many examples of it. People just joins the mob without knowing the proper truth. 

                                         

# Tramp 

     Furthermore we finds this tramp at assembly line ( crumples the handcraft business) where he screws the nuts in the industry. He has to do work at the speed of machines. During that period he suffers from amnesia. And gets depressed. Which again portrays the situation of contemporary labourers. Master of the industry controls everything through the camera. 

                                       

# Feeding machine 

    For saving the time industry master implies the feeding machine and tramp  forcefully  fed by the malfunctioning feeding machine. 

                                       

                                   

# Unemployment 

       Because of the machines we finds so many works of man has taken place by machine and as a result of it we finds the unemployment. We sees the tramp is now wandering on the street. And unintentionally  he got the flag which portrays the labourers powers and all the mob ( An idle mind is devil's workshop )  joins with him considering as a leader of the labourer union. We finds the Gamins father also suffers from the unemployment. 

                                    

#  Better to live in jail 

       Again and again we finds that tramp wants to go in the jail. Because he knows that if he will go outside than again he will suffer. It indirectly satires on the poor condition of the common men, people have no fear for jail or they can feed their stomach in the jail  where outside of it there is nothing. 

                                       

# Cocaine 

     In the jail we finds one of the prisoner has a cocaine which shows the terrible outcome of it . And Tramp considering it salt and eats. Which gives him power and helps police in capturing the thieves. And as a reward they frees him. But he doesn't want to go. 

# The Gamin 

     She is a girl who has two little sisters. She also suffers from the unemployment and always remains busy in the search of food. She gets caught when she steals the loaf of bread. But tramp saves her. 

                                      

# Jobs in cafe 

    Both works in cafe, she becomes dancer and tramp becomes singer ,table man. Which portrays the negative things because for the employment they becomes ready to do everything. Again it shows the contemporary social issues. But again police comes and tries to catch the girl. 

                                       

# Goes away from the machinery world 

     At last we finds that both becomes frustrated. But again with raising of the sun they hopes that the peace and happiness will come. 

                                        

# Conclusion 

       So here I am concluding the review of this amazing film. We can find that how well story is told. Charlie Chaplin had an insight which favours the common and it automatically gives the voice of Marxism. His works mainly focuses on the contemporary issue. Which makes literature better. We finds so many sarcastic voice but because of the comedic manner it makes it more easier for him to show that issues. We never feels bored. 

         In the end it tells people to not loose the hope for  happiness. Overall we finds  Comedy, symbolism, depression, struggle to survive, social problems which makes this film awesome.
